Have you ever thought about the possibility of discovering lost wealth that legally belongs to you?

Across the state of Pennsylvania, millions of dollars of unclaimed property remain uncollected, waiting to be reclaimed by their rightful owners. From long-forgotten savings bonds to uncashed paychecks, there are many ways you could have assets owed to you that you're unaware of.

The good news is, recovering what's yours is easier than you might think.

The Pennsylvania Treasury holds unclaimed property in trust indefinitely until claimed by the owner. No matter how many years have passed, you can still claim assets that are rightfully yours.

How Did My Assets Become 'Unclaimed'?

There are several reasons why assets may become unclaimed property. When a financial account or investment remains dormant for a period of time, the holder (such as a bank) is required to transfer the funds to the state.

Some common reasons for this include:
  • Accounts that were closed with remaining balances
  • Uncashed checks, dividends or refunds never claimed
  • Unpaid insurance payouts, wages, commissions or deposits
  • Contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes
Often, the original holder loses contact with the owner due to outdated contact information or a change of address. Rather than retain the assets indefinitely, they are transferred to the state's unclaimed property office to hold until claimed.

Search the Treasury's Database for Your Lost Funds

The Pennsylvania Treasury has made searching for and claiming unclaimed property simple.

You can search their online database by entering your name and city to check for any unclaimed assets owed to you. If you find unclaimed property that belongs to you, submit a claim form with proof of ownership to have the funds returned to you at no cost.

Some tangible unclaimed items like jewelry and collectibles are auctioned off annually. However, it's best to search the owner database first before bidding to avoid paying for something you're entitled to claim for free!

Beware of Scams - Verify Any Requests for Personal Information

Be cautious of unsolicited calls, emails or letters claiming you have unclaimed property and requesting personal information or money. The state unclaimed property office will never contact you directly asking for account access, fees or payment to claim your assets.

Look up the official state website and contact them yourself to verify the legitimacy of any notice before providing sensitive data.

Time to Start Your Treasure Hunt!

Don't miss out on the opportunity to claim what legally belongs to you. Search for your unclaimed property today and you may find unexpected funds you never knew you were owed. With billions of dollars in unclaimed assets nationwide, the odds are in your favor.

Check back regularly as new property is reported to the state each year. You never know what buried treasures you might dig up!
